Stay Safe During the Holidays: Mobile Dating Apps Emerge and HIV Cases in Asia Continues to Skyrocket
In recent years, the advent of smartphone apps had led the younger generation to engage in multiple casual sex with strangers. This resulted to a bloating number of HIV cases among teenagers in the Asia Pacific region. This correlation has been proven by the United Nations as one of the major factors to this spike especially among gay men.
According to the research, adolescents as young as 10-19 year olds are the primary users of these dating apps. This is roughly around 1.2 billion of the world’s adolescent population. What’s scary is, the fastest spread of epidemic is said to be related to those men who have sex with men. Other percentages include those who are involved with sex tourism, drug sharing and prostitution.
In an article, The Guardian revealed Wing-Sie Cheng’s sentiment on this matter. He said, “Young gay men themselves have consistently told us that they are now using mobile dating apps to meet up for sex, and are having more casual sex with more people as a result. We know that this kind of risky behaviour increases the spread of HIV.”
The UNICEF HIV/AIDS adviser added that these kids are more likely to die from the said disease because they’re the ones who are less likely to seek treatment because of fear of social stigma and being exposed to their friends and family.
The number of people living with AIDS in Asia Pacific are skyrocketing in numbers. The figures speak for themselves, 220,000 people and this unofficial count is expected to be so much higher in reality. The primary factor that led to this increase is the inconsistent condom use among the gay community.
In another note, the UNICEF official said that researchers found “that with the rise of these apps, the probability and risk of infection will increase multifold because it makes it so much easier for them to date other guys and hook up for sex.”
A spokesman from Grindr said, “As the world’s largest gay platform, we take matters of sexual health very seriously.” They reiterated their policies on a strict age requirement, having 18 as the minimum and its campaign on HIV awareness through popup ads encourage its plethora of users to get tested on local testing clinics. On the same note, the spokesman also expressed his disdain and remarked, “The application is where the key population is but no one is going to read the pop-up because the purpose of people going to those apps to find sex, not to find knowledge. The results are not that favourable. People just close it.”
Just as a recap, AIDS is the ultimate cause of death in Africa and has been the 2nd killer disease among teenagers in the entire world. This amount tripled over the past 15 years and while most of it is caused by mother-to-child transmission, this new breed of cases in Asia is booming and lurking to be the new era of epidemic madness.
