There’s nothing more fulfilling than the feeling of being able to have a heart to heart talk with someone you know. Much more is the contentment that you achieve when you know that you’ve somehow lessened his or her burdens.
Well, how do you give advice? Lots of people don’t even know how to start to begin with. Clearly, there are things you have to know before you wear your Oprah wig.First of all, you have to make sure that the person is soliciting your advice. The problem with other people is, they come off as pushy and preachy when they do so because they assume that their opinion is needed even when it’s uncalled for. It is even better when you do this to a friend whom you have known for a long time. You have to always remember that as much as it is a great honor to be asked for advice, it also is a responsibility. Always keep these things in mind when giving advice to a friend or a loved one.
The key to understanding is listening. Do not assume that you know eveything. Every situation is unique and you have to see that there are different approaches to solve a problem.
Put yourself in their shoes
When giving advice, imagine yourself as the advisee. If it were you, what would you have done?
Be empathic
Sincerity goes a long way. Give him/her an impression that you feel his or her predicament. That way, that person will open up to you more.
After laying all the details, start thinking of ways or possible solutions. Don’t be too pushy with your suggestions because at the end of the day, it’s not your call. You’re just there to give advice.
And lastly, be honest
No matter how bad it is, remember to give your most honest take on the subject. Sugar coating is cheap and will probably lead your friend nowhere.
